Hugh Masekela headlines December's Kalalu World Music Festival in St. Lucia

Fans of World Music mark December 1st - 4th on your calendars. On those dates the Kalalu World Music festival will make its debut in St. Lucia. Plans for this exciting event were announced Tuesday September 13th at SOB’s, New York’s home for the music, by festival director Adrian Augier and Lorine Charles St. Jules of the St. Lucia Tourist Board.

The Kalalu festival takes its name from that uniquely Caribbean dish whose main ingredient, callaloo leaves was brought from Africa in the 17th century. It is only natural then that given the influence of the motherland that African Artists from Senegal to South Africa will be a key ingredient in the festival line up. Caribbean music Latin, Creole and West Indian, has in turn inspired modern African artists so the festival offers a unique opportunity to hear the musical cross currents interact.

Friday’s Show will offer the spectacular voices of Jose Alberto “El Canario” and Guinean Sekouba “Bambino” Diabate. Bambino was born into a griot family and has become not only the most popular singer in his country but one of the great voices of all Africa. He is best known outside of Guinea for his work with the popular Afro-Latino super group Africando. Martin Sinnock of africasounds.com says of Bambino “He is desperately proud of his country’s rich musical tradition, but at the same time keen to present his music in a contemporary and very internationally appealing manner.” Bambino performed a short set of Mande praise song, at the SOBs opening, joined by the Cameroonian born, New York based songstress Kaissa.

Idrissa Diop of Senegal and Haitian Emeline Michel, La Reine de la Chanson Creole (Queen of Haitian Song), headline the opening night Thursday, December 1st.

On Friday Cuban legends Orquestra Sensaccion, who first performed in 1953 and will bring the classic rhythms of the island, charanga, cha cha cha, rhumba and more to the stage. Kekele’s rhumba inspired rhythms will also fill the air. Rhumba was the music of the 70’s and 80’s in the Congo and Kekele’s 2001 release Rumba Congo captures the spirit of the era. Also on stage will be one of the foremost guitarists in the Caribbean, St. Lucian Ronald “Boo” Hinkson, likely featuring music from his latest release Beyond. Rounding out the evening’s featured acts and representing urban youth will be Yerba Buena, a collective of latin artists whose music crosses musical genres. Andres Levin leader of the New York based band says of their latest release Island Life “I always want the Yerba Buena sound to be evolving. Yerba Buena will always be about Afro-Cuban roots but this record has more gypsy and cumbia influences” Yerba Buena gives these traditional forms a contemporary urban groove.

The music of his native South African and American jazz have shaped the sound of Hugh Masekela who will headline the closing evening of music. Also eagerly anticipated is the opportunity to hear Blue-mango’s jazz influenced explorations into their Creole roots, Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca, and the funana dance music of Cape Verdians Ferro Gaitia.

The goal of the festival Augier says is “to make St. Lucia the Mecca for the arts in the Caribbean.” A vision made possible when Heineken Music came aboard as principal sponsor. Samaans Park, where the event takes place is an exciting new venue with dramatic views of the sea and sky.

Worldwatch Institute Reports Renewable Energy Alleviates Poverty

Renewable energies can alleviate poverty in developing world, says report

NEW YORK, New York, US, September 28, 2005 (Refocus Weekly) A number of renewable energy options that currently are in wide use are “viable options” for poverty alleviation in developing countries and can contribute towards meeting the goals of the Millennium Development Goals.

“Access to essential energy services will need to increase for the MDG targets to be met,” concludes ‘Energy for Development: The Potential Role of Renewable Energy in Meeting the Millennium Development Goals’ produced by the Worldwatch Institute for the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN 21). “In some instances, renewable energy technologies can meet needs that conventional approaches cannot; in other circumstances, RETs can provide comparable services more readily than conventional services, and at comparable costs.”

The report was released in conjunction with the World Summit at the United Nations, and uses 26 case studies on solar, wind, small hydro, biogas, ethanol and biodiesel to demonstrate renewable energy options that currently are “in wide use in some regions and that are now ready for large-scale introduction in many areas of the developing world.” As their costs have declined as their reliability has improved, “renewable energy technologies have often emerged as more affordable and practical means of providing essential energy services.”

“Introduction of RETs is frequently hindered by their high cost and the perception that they require heavy government subsidy,” the report explains. “While high initial costs are a reality in many circumstances, this is frequently exacerbated by the lack of a competitive energy market and the large subsidies provided to conventional energy systems.”

“The investment patterns of governments and international finance institutions, regulatory frameworks oriented to conventional energy sources, externalization of costs and benefits, and governmental purchasing policies that favour conventional sources are among the obstacles to advancing renewables,” it adds. “If these barriers are overcome and renewable energy production is scaled up, the cost of the new energy options will decline significantly.”

The cost-per-unit of an energy technology and its ability to provide essential energy services “are the most important indicators of its suitability for poverty alleviation,” it adds. “The challenge is to create a policy framework that allows renewable energy to be introduced where it makes long-term economic sense, and to allow poor countries to benefit from the declining cost curves that characterize renewable energy markets in many industrial countries.”

“Delivering clean, efficient, reliable and renewable energy to developing countries is absolutely critical for poverty reduction and for meeting the internationally agreed development goals,” says Klaus Toepfer of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who attended the release of the report. “Every time oil surges over $50 a barrel, the overseas aid of many African countries - money intended for health care, schools and other vital services - is gobbled up in paying the extra fuel costs. It is also vital because, over the next few decades, the world is likely to invest some $16 trillion in new energy infrastructure; we need to ensure that this is low-carbon technology that gives us a better chance to fight climate change.”

World Music Festival Chicago 2005 a huge success!

Venues, programming propel World Music Fest

September 25, 2005

BY LAURA EMERICK Staff Reporter, Chicago Sun Times

Around the world in seven days, at warp speed. The just-concluded World Music Festival Chicago 2005 managed to cram in an amazingly stellar 50-plus acts from 29 countries for its seventh annual edition. And in the process, the festival scored its best showing yet.

Festival organizers presented a truly comprehensive lineup, from all the major continents: Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America. As an added benefit, the Latin contingent was particularly strong this year, with Mexico's Celso Pina and Lila Downs, Cuba's Juan Carlos Formell and Nachito Herrera, Uruguay's Los Gauchos de Roldan and a special emphasis on the music of Brazil.

The festival also offered the opportunity to hear major stars in intimate or unlikely settings: Japanese-Hawaiian ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro (who's a household name in Asia), Malian duo Amadou & Mariam (Blender magazine cited A&M's latest, "Dimanche a Bamako," as "the world music album of the year") and Brazilian legend Wilson das Neves, who at his HotHouse show Tuesday received this ringing endorsement from one of his Orquestra Imperial collaborators: "Do you realize how important this man is in our country?"

Plus, festivalgoers got to hear rising talents such as Brazil's Seu Jorge, Domenico+2 and Badi Assad; Portugal's Ana Moura, Cape Verde's Lura and Norway's Frigg.

As usual, there was an exceedingly high caliber of performances, anchored this year by two Millennium Park events: Mexican Night, co-sponsored by the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum and the Chicago Mexican Consulate, and Brazilian Night, presented with the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Millennium Park shows also underscored the city's increasing willingness to open up its glittering Pritzker Pavilion for concerts other than classical and jazz. A year after the debut of Millennium Park, the city's free festivals are still relegated to the ghetto of the acoustically and aesthetically inferior Petrillo Music Shell two blocks away. With the success of the Mexican and Brazilian Nights, which drew well-behaved crowds of 10,000 and 7,500, respectively, perhaps our city fathers will further reconsider their restrictive booking practices for the Pritzker Pavilion.

"This has been the best attended festival overall," said Michael Orlove, program director for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. "The addition of the Millennium Park shows certainly boosted attendance. But it's also really becoming a festival that people expect and look forward to. We're not nearly at the status of the blues and jazz festivals, but slowly, year by year, people are starting to put us on their calendars. We're really happy with the diversity and depth of the artists and the overall public response."

Solargenix to build 64 megawatt photovoltaic plant in Boulder City, NV

Boulder City, Nevada, USA: Solargenix Energy Secures Approvals for 64MW Solar Thermal Electric Plant

Solargenix Energy has secured the approval of amendments to their Power Purchase Agreements with Nevada Power Company and Sierra Pacific Power Company by the Public Utility Commission of Nevada. This approval by the PUCN will allow Solargenix to complete the development of Nevada Solar One, a 64-megawatt (MW) Solar Thermal Electric Generating Plant located in Boulder City, Nevada.

Solargenix Energy says that Nevada Solar One will will be the third largest solar thermal electric power plant in the world. This project will make Nevada one of the largest generators of solar energy in the U. S.

“We are most appreciative of all of the efforts by the many participants that helped make Nevada’s Renewal Energy Portfolio standard possible, including the PUCN, Governor Guinn, the Nevada State Legislature, the Nevada Bureau of Consumer Protection, Nevada Power Company, Sierra Pacific Power Company, the Nevada Development Authority and all of the citizens of Boulder City,” said Solargenix CEO John Myles.

Myles also explained that “many people are not familiar with concentrating solar thermal technology, and its proven track record and capability to play a significant role in addressing many of the most important energy issues that confront America and the rest of the world.”

According to published information from the U. S. Department of Energy through the U.S. National Laboratories, which is available on the Solargenix website, the parabolic trough technology utilized in this plant represents one of the major renewable energy success stories of the past 2 decades and has a near-term potential to compete directly with conventional fossil fuel powered technologies.

In addition, the DOE has issued a report that identifies suitable land and solar resources in Nevada that could produce over 600,000 megawatts (MW) of power generation using concentrating solar technologies. Currently, Nevada’s electricity consumption is less than 3% of this resource capacity. This same report claims that the economic benefits far exceed the cost to develop this clean renewable energy source. The Boulder City plant located in the El Dorado Valley is scheduled to begin production of electricity in early 2007.

Toronto clubs for rock’n’roll and modern rock

The following article from the Toronto Star provides clubs new and old and their main claims to fame, as everyone from the Stones to Elvis Costello, The Police to Led Zeppelin have played Toronto nightspots:

Toronto's Rock of Ages

Rolling Stones appearance brings back memories A tour through T.O.'s rocking

live music clubs

PETER GODDARD, GREG QUILL, BEN RAYNER AND VIT WAGNER, ENTERTAINMENT REPORTERS

Whatever the outcome of the Rolling Stones' appearance Monday at the Air Canada Centre, it won't overshadow the band's 1977 El Mocambo show, the first club gig that rock's reigning megagroup had played since its scrappy beginnings in early '60s London.

The El Mo show brought the band back to its roots, and Maggie Trudeau to sit wide-eyed at a centre-stage table. It also confirmed what a great club town Toronto was. Then again, it had been this way since the swing-era '40s.

"Next to Memphis, this is the best city for live clubs," The Band's Levon Helm told the Star back when the Yonge St. strip had half a dozen happening jazz joints, plus its share of rhythm 'n' blues.

"Yorkville was where the action was in the mid-1960s," recalls local guitar hero Danny Marks. He goes on to list a litany of local clubs that have faded into rock history: the Abbey Road Club, Picadilly Tube, Coalbin, Scuffers, The Club Jamaica, The Knob, Mouse Hole, Penny Farthing, El Patio, The Flick, Chez Monique, The Mimicombo, Gogue Inn, Rondun, Muddy York, the Colonial, Meet Market, Bermuda, Coq D'or, Hawk's Nest, Concord, the Red Gas ...

As is shown by the angst surrounding the recent closing of New York's legendary punk club CBGB's, any club's disappearance has era-ending implications. This is particularly true in Toronto, where more music history has arguably been made in clubs than in any stadium concert.

Did you hear about the night Led Zeppelin played the Rock Pile? Or when The Police made their debut at the Horseshoe? Or the afternoon Elvis Costello waited in line outside the El Mo for his own show?

A few Star writers have put their heads (and rusty memories) together to produce a list of just a few definitive club icons in Toronto's past and present, proving that rock 'n' roll never forgets — it just gets nostalgic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Present

Bovine Sex Club (542 Queen St. W.) The go-to destination at last call among black-clad downtown ne'er-do-wells with punk, glam and metal pretensions, the Bovine also regularly crams 'em into the narrow chute by the bar for shows by bands of a similar ilk. Folks like Marilyn Manson and Tommy Lee have been known to stop by for a cocktail.

The Cameron House (408 Queen St. W.) In a history dating more than 80 years, the Cameron has morphed from a hotel to a shady flophouse to a well-regarded launching pad for emergent Toronto artists. Blue Rodeo, Barenaked Ladies, Jane Siberry and Holly Cole were regular performers on the tiny backroom stage. The enormous bugs on the outside wall are just plain cool.

El Mocambo (464 Spadina Ave.) Arguably Toronto's most internationally notorious rock venue, the beloved El Mo is infamous for being the site of the Rolling Stones' scandalous dalliance with former Canadian first lady Margaret Trudeau during the recording of the band's Love You Live album in 1977. High-wattage stars like U2 and Elvis Costello also passed through the club's dingy upstairs room back in the day, although only faint traces of the bar's scuzzy glory days survive.

Grossman's Tavern (379 Spadina Ave.) Toronto's longest surviving live music saloon, open since 1948 and since the early 1970s the legit spawning ground for scores of artists, including The Downchild Blues Band, Jeff Healey, poets Milton Acorn and Robert Priest, singer/songwriters Rebecca Jenkins and Alannah Myles, it's still the place to hang for extended jams by emerging and veteran talent alike.

The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen St. W.) The legendary 'Shoe has brought in just about every worthy act you can name — the Ramones, the Strokes, the Foo Fighters, Neko Case, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Tragically Hip and, yes, the Rolling Stones — at one time or another since its original inception in 1947. Canadian icons such as Stompin' Tom Connors and The Band made their initial stamps in the back room, while notables who made their first Toronto appearances there include the Police and Wilco.

Lee's Palace (529 Bloor St. W.) Still one of the city's most thriving hot spots for what's current — and coming — the Annex joint marked its 20th year with no fanfare earlier this month. The first Toronto stop for such noteworthies as the Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And yes, we know you were one of handful of small handful of people who caught Nirvana's Toronto debut there on April 16, 1990.

Phoenix Concert Theatre/Diamond Club (410 Sherbourne St.) If Bob Dylan never plays another club show in Toronto, the Phoenix will be the site of his last such performance in the city. The location had an even more colourful life in its previous incarnation as the Diamond, an '80s focal point that hosted concerts by everyone from Sinead O'Connor and Camper Van Beethoven to Blue Rodeo and Cowboy Junkies to the Kronos Quartet.

The Rivoli (332 Queen St. W.) The epitome of 1980s Queen West hipsterdom, the Riv — opened on the site of the 1920s Rivoli Vaudeville Theatre in 1982 — remains a stable source of live music and comedy. Barenaked Ladies, Ron Sexsmith and the Cowboy Junkies adopted it as an early haunt, while Beck, Iggy Pop and Tori Amos have visited the cramped room over the years. Plus, it launched the career of the Kids in the Hall, which is about the coolest thing ever.

Silver Dollar Room (486 Spadina Ave. at College) Now Toronto's premier blues venue, and always considered the poor cousin to the nearby El Mocambo, the Dollar has a long history as one of Toronto's most used and abused music haunts, hosting hard rock, punk, country, alt-rock and even folk in 50 years of virtually unrefurbished inelegance.

Sneaky Dee's (431 College St.). One of the few bearable spots on the Little Italy club strip, the battered and unpretentious Sneaky Dee's finally brought live music back to the upstairs room a couple of years ago, witnessing boffo shows by the likes of Broken Social Scene, the Constantines, the Creeping Nobodies and the Nein. And the Tex-Mex menu downstairs is pretty fine, too.

Past

BamBoo Club (312 Queen St. W.) An early home to calypso, reggae and world music sounds. Introduced Toronto audiences to Erykah Badu, and was the launching pad for the Parachute Club. The site has since gone from an unpretentious slice of Caribbean flair to its ideological opposite, the chic be-seen lounge Ultra.

The Beverly Tavern (240 Queen St. W.) The closest bar to the Ontario College of Art and Design, the Bev hosted the likes of the Dishes, the Cads, Johnny and the G-Rays, the Country Lads, the Biffs and Cardboard Brains on any weekend night from 1976 through the early '80s. Martha and the Muffins premiered their international hit "Echo Beach" there. The Beverley was central to the artistic revolution on Queen St. W. in the 1980s.

Club Kingsway (Queensway and Kingsway) While not often used as a concert venue, this former bingo hall was visited by punk acts the Ramones and 999, prior to closing its doors in 1986.

The Crash 'n' Burn (15 Duncan St.) Another early punk landmark, this short-lived club hosted 1977 performances by Canadian upstarts the Diodes, Teenage Head, the Viletones and the Dishes.

The Edge (Egerton's) (Church and Shuter). At the edge of the Ryerson campus and now lost to the university's expansive complex of new buildings, The Edge (named after 19th- century Toronto educator Egerton Ryerson) was ostensibly a folk haunt in the late 1970s, but often featured progressive art rockers, experimental instrumentalists and local new wavers as well.

Gasworks (Yonge at Carlton). The Gasworks was a Mecca for headbangers in the 1970s and '80s. Immortalized by Mike Myers in Wayne's World, it was home to Sebastian Bach, legendary local hard rocker Greg Godovitz, Rush, Helix, Kim Mitchell and Lee Aaron. As a rock landmark, the club was on par with the El Mo and spawned similar metal palaces all within a block or two, including The Level Crossing, Yonge Station and The Nickelodeon (now the Hard Rock Café).

FPL Energy orders 600 megawatts of photovoltaic solar electricity panels from Siemens Solar

FPL buys photovoltaic solar panels from Siemens

Orlando, Florida [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Siemens Power Generation received an order from FPL Energy for wind turbines totaling up to 600 MW. FPL Energy currently operates 45 wind facilities in operation in 15 states.

This order will support the planned expansion of FPL Energy's wind-driven electricity generation projects. Siemens will manufacture, install and commission its 2.3-MW Mk II wind turbines, with delivery scheduled to begin in 2006.

"The wind power business, especially in the U.S. and Canada, is more favorable now than it was in the past," said Randy Zwirn, member, Siemens Power Generation Executive Management and president and CEO.

"With the increased focus on clean renewable energy, as well as high natural gas prices and volatility, wind power is an increasingly attractive alternative. In addition, the recently passed Federal Energy Policy Act includes provisions for subsidies and tax credits for the development of renewable energy, which enhances the attractiveness for our customers."

FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group, generates electricity using clean fuels such as natural gas, wind, solar, hydroelectric and nuclear.

"Wind projects continue to be an important part of the growth strategy for FPL Energy," said Jim Robo, president of FPL Energy. "This new turbine agreement with Siemens provides us with a platform to deploy turbines early next year."

Follow the wiring from many solar PV panels put up in the last decade in North America and you're bound to find a Xantrex inverter. Soon, a look deep inside a new line of multi-MW wind turbines will reveal Xantrex components at work generating renewable energy from the wind as well.

This week, the Canada-based company announced a deal to supply wind converters for California-based Clipper Windpower Technology's new line of 2.5 MW "Liberty" wind turbines.

"This is the largest capacity wind converter that Xantrex has produced," said Mossadiq S. Umedaly, Xantrex's Chairman. "It converts variable power from the turbine's generators into high-quality AC power for the utility grid, meeting challenging new guidelines established earlier this year by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for grid-fault ride-through capability."

Canadian singer Jason Dean Fortune new king of InXS, BBC News

A rockin’ Canadian is the new lead singer of rock band INXS after a worldwide search to replace the late Michael Hutchence. Jason Dean Fortune, 31, known as J D Fortune, beat two other finalists and will record an album and embark on a world tour with the Australian band.

INXS held auditions in six continents as part of a reality TV series.

Since Hutchence died in 1997, INXS have continued with a number of temporary singers including Terence Trent D'Arby.

Australian band InXS picks Canada’s J D Fortune to lead

Although the veteran Aussie rockers had fun taping their summer-long reality series, Rock Star: INXS, it was also serious business. "This whole process, the TV show, was all about finding a new singer so we can do what we do best," guitarist/saxophonist Kirk Pengilly said after the Tuesday morning taping of the show's finale at Los Angeles' CBS Studios. "And that's go out and play music."

The show's winner -- and, by definition, INXS' new lead singer -- is Canadian J.D. Fortune, who out-dueled Chicagoan Marty Casey with renditions of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and INXS' own "What You Need," backed by his bandmates-to-be. As a consolation prize, Casey was offered an opening slot on INXS' upcoming world tour.

"I know you guys have waited a long time for this," keyboardist Andrew Farris told the audience before the band made its decision, "but we've waited even longer."

INXS, who formed in 1977 and scored hits in the Eighties and Nineties with singles like "What You Need," "Need You Tonight" and "Suicide Blonde," have been without a permanent singer since charismatic frontman Michael Hutchence was found dead in a Sydney hotel room in 1997. The band had since tried a series of vocalists, including a tour with British R&B singer Terence Trent D'Arby.

Pengilly said that this time the band feels complete. "It's been a long time since we've been onstage with a singer," he said. The chemistry was immediately apparent as Fortune joined his new bandmates for a post-taping concert that included several of the band's biggest hits, as well as a new track, "Easy, Easy."

Chicago's Marty Casey may open for InXS on World Tour

Marty Casey may not be the next lead singer of INXS, but he's still a rock star.

The 31-year-old Chicago singer was the runner-up Tuesday night on the CBS reality show "Rock Star: INXS" -- a competition to find a new lead singer for the multi-platinum band.

J.D. Fortune, a musician from Canada, was the band's choice to replace former lead singer Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997. By winning the competition, Fortune will record a new CD with the band and take part in a world tour.

But don't feel too bad for Casey -- he was given a golden opportunity. After telling him they didn't choose him as their next lead singer, they did offer Casey the possibility of opening up for the band when they go on tour.

Casey, who's band the Lovehammers has been a Chicago favorite for over a decade, said it was the best of both worlds.

"When they announced that [Fortune] was the winner my heart just sank," Casey said Tuesday night. "But when they said they wanted the Lovehammers to open up their world tour, I felt like I was back from the abyss, and it kind of feels like its the right thing to happen for me."

Canada's J D Fortune new frotman for rockstars InXS

LOS ANGELES (CP) - Canadian J.D. Fortune's hopes for fame and fortune as the lead singer for INXS were realized Tuesday night on Rock Star: INXS.

In the weeks and months to come, the Toronto musician will front a world tour with the band and sing on their new album. Shortly after a rousing rendition of You Can't Always Get What You Want, Fortune was chosen in a glitzy finale to the popular show to replace Michael Hutchence, who hanged himself in a hotel room in 1997.

ECD Ovonics soars from $49.2 mil loss to $49.5 mil PROFIT!!!

September 12 , 2005

Rochester Hills, MI, USA: ECD Ovonics Reports Fiscal Year 2005 Operating Results

Thin film manufacturer, Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. has reported financial results for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2005. The Company reported income from continuing operations of $49.5 million on revenues of $156.6 million, compared to a loss from continuing operations of $49.2 million on revenues of $66.3 million in fiscal year 2004. On a per-share basis, the income was $1.70 (fully diluted) in 2005 compared to a loss of $2.15 in 2004.

"A major contributor to the increased income and revenue for 2005 was $79.5 million in revenue from a license agreement," said Robert C. Stempel, Chairman and CEO. "This one-time, noncash event is consistent with our business strategy of monetizing our intellectual property, which is historically carried at zero on our balance sheet."

For the year ended June 30, 2005, United Solar Ovonic sold 16.0MW ($50.8 million) of PV systems -- an 84% increase over 2004 sales. Additionally, United Solar Ovonic has a six-month order backlog valued at $51 million.

In response to growing demand for its UNI-SOLAR® products, United Solar Ovonic broke ground for its second state-of-the-art solar module manufacturing plant in Auburn Hills, Mich., to double its solar cell/module manufacturing capacity. Occupancy of the new facility is scheduled for May 2006, and it is anticipated that the plant will begin manufacturing products in the fall of 2006 following optimization of the manufacturing equipment.

Cobasys, a joint venture between ECD Ovonics and Chevron, announced that it has received battery pack purchase orders for hybrid vehicle applications from world class automotive companies.

Mozilla's Firefox browser, Netscape offering, each gain on Microsoft's IE; Image sites grow 400%+ in 2005 due to blog boom

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- For the 10th consecutive month, the popularity of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser has declined. Netscape's browser showed the strongest growth in market share in August, rising 33% to a 2.02% share, according to NetApplications, a Web-site analysis company.

Mozilla's Firefox browser maintained its second place position. Last month, when Firefox had an 8.07% share of usage, Dan Shapero, chief operating officer of NetApplications, said the browser was "flirting with mass appeal." In August, Firefox's share rose to 8.27%.

The market share of Microsoft's (MSFT: news, chart, profile) Internet Explorer slipped to 86.3%. In October of last year, IE peaked at 92.3%.

Also, the popularity of image-hosting sites such as PhotoBucket.com is soaring; read both stories and more on Frank Barnako's MarketWatch.com

BBC reports efficient Eritrean cookers reduce firewood use by 50%

New Eritrean cookers saving firewood

By Ed Harris
BBC News, Eritrea

An award-winning fuel-efficient cooker is helping Eritrea save its trees by reducing the consumption of firewood by 50%.

The design is an improved version of the traditional mogogo stove used for baking the traditional bread called injera.

Deforestation was already a serious problem before Eritrea's independence in 1993 as a lot of vegetation, used as cover by Eritrean guerrillas during their 30-year struggle for independence from neighbouring Ethiopia, was destroyed in fighting.

But persistent drought and the displacement of more than a third of the population during its most recent war with Ethiopia have compounded the problem.
