A rockin’ Canadian is the new lead singer of rock band INXS after a worldwide search to replace the late Michael Hutchence. Jason Dean Fortune, 31, known as J D Fortune, beat two other finalists and will record an album and embark on a world tour with the Australian band.
INXS held auditions in six continents as part of a reality TV series.
Since Hutchence died in 1997, INXS have continued with a number of temporary singers including Terence Trent D'Arby.

Australian band InXS picks Canada’s J D Fortune to lead
Although the veteran Aussie rockers had fun taping their summer-long reality series, Rock Star: INXS, it was also serious business. "This whole process, the TV show, was all about finding a new singer so we can do what we do best," guitarist/saxophonist Kirk Pengilly said after the Tuesday morning taping of the show's finale at Los Angeles' CBS Studios. "And that's go out and play music."
The show's winner -- and, by definition, INXS' new lead singer -- is Canadian J.D. Fortune, who out-dueled Chicagoan Marty Casey with renditions of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and INXS' own "What You Need," backed by his bandmates-to-be. As a consolation prize, Casey was offered an opening slot on INXS' upcoming world tour.
"I know you guys have waited a long time for this," keyboardist Andrew Farris told the audience before the band made its decision, "but we've waited even longer."
INXS, who formed in 1977 and scored hits in the Eighties and Nineties with singles like "What You Need," "Need You Tonight" and "Suicide Blonde," have been without a permanent singer since charismatic frontman Michael Hutchence was found dead in a Sydney hotel room in 1997. The band had since tried a series of vocalists, including a tour with British R&B singer Terence Trent D'Arby.
Pengilly said that this time the band feels complete. "It's been a long time since we've been onstage with a singer," he said. The chemistry was immediately apparent as Fortune joined his new bandmates for a post-taping concert that included several of the band's biggest hits, as well as a new track, "Easy, Easy."

Chicago's Marty Casey may open for InXS on World Tour
Marty Casey may not be the next lead singer of INXS, but he's still a rock star.
The 31-year-old Chicago singer was the runner-up Tuesday night on the CBS reality show "Rock Star: INXS" -- a competition to find a new lead singer for the multi-platinum band.
J.D. Fortune, a musician from Canada, was the band's choice to replace former lead singer Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997. By winning the competition, Fortune will record a new CD with the band and take part in a world tour.
But don't feel too bad for Casey -- he was given a golden opportunity. After telling him they didn't choose him as their next lead singer, they did offer Casey the possibility of opening up for the band when they go on tour.
Casey, who's band the Lovehammers has been a Chicago favorite for over a decade, said it was the best of both worlds.
"When they announced that [Fortune] was the winner my heart just sank," Casey said Tuesday night. "But when they said they wanted the Lovehammers to open up their world tour, I felt like I was back from the abyss, and it kind of feels like its the right thing to happen for me."
