Evergreen Solar in $70 Million deal with PowerLight

Evergreen? Yea, I always thought this one had potential, I mean, how many companies can boast that they installed the solar panels on the Whitehouse? Here's the scoop, as reported by AltEnergyStocks.com:

Evergreen Solar Announces $70 Million Sales Agreement with PowerLight Corporation

Evergreen Solar Inc (ESLR) announced its largest sales agreement to date. Evergreen Solar and PowerLight Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement for a guaranteed contract which calls for Evergreen Solar to ship a minimum of $70 million of photovoltaic (PV) modules to PowerLight over the next four years. There are defined options which could increase the value of the shipments in the contract to approximately $170 million. Shipments to PowerLight are scheduled to commence during the first half of 2006. [ more ]

The stock has gapped up over 14% this morning on this news. Cramer from CNBC has been talking about this stock recently as well, which has also generated some interest in the stock. I spent sometime preparing for the trading day today and took a quick glance at this stock last night. It has a solid uptrend but I felt that it was reaching the top of the current trading range so decided to hold off and wait for it to cycle near the trading range lows to enter the stock.

Holi-E making money on Green Stock picks

Have you ever read the Holistic Economy blog out of Ohio? Check it out:

My Renewable Energy Portfolio is Making Cash

Several years ago I decided to create an "renewable energy portfolio" of corporate stocks, because I absolutely knew that oil prices were headed skyward (we all knew this back in 1999, remember?) and decided that certain companies would greatly benefit from this. First, oil companies would benefit, as we've seen. But also, the renewable energy companies would benefit.

As Goes the Price of Oil, So Go the Prices of Renewable Stocks

The reason renewables benefit is because as the price of oil rises, it begins to overtake the costs of the renewables. For instance, using oil to fire power plants has always been cheaper than, say, wind turbine energy. But now, it's not. Oil is more expensive. So, companies that make wind turbines are making tons of money, because people are starting to turn to these alternatives, including companies like American Electric Power. They bought out Enron's entire wind farm collection in Texas in 2002, and having been on a buying streak in renewables ever since.

So, my renewable energy portfolio has been doing really well. In fact, my investments there far outpace what I pay extra in heating bills and to put gasoline in the tank of my car. So, overall, I'm making out like bandit.

Start Your Own Renewable Energy Portfolio Today!

So how do you fight high gasoline prices? Start your own renewable energy portfolio of stocks. Think wind, solar, geothermal, biodiesel, hydrogen and hybrid cars. You really can't go wrong. (Due diligence in picking good company stocks is still important, of course.) As much as my portfolio has increased in the past six years, it's nothing to what is coming as oil prices continue to rise worldwide.

Oh, why didn't I buy a renewable energy mutual fund? There weren't any good ones back then. I found one but it had performed so poorly that I could not stomach putting cash into it. I haven't checked to see how it's done since 2002, but I'll bet it's doing fine.

You know what? I just checked and it's still doing pretty poorly. It seems to be a very volatile fund, up like crazy one year, and down even more the next year. You might be better off on your own.

Ten Tips to cut costs with conservation and clean energy

Ten Ways to Save Energy and Money Using Renewables

Peterborough, NH, USA [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The U.S. is facing the reality of a very expensive heating season, higher gasoline and natural gas prices and increasing awareness of our nation's effect on global warming. So it is timely for us to offer some tips (and plenty of links) on how to save money and energy using renewable resources.

1) Heat Your Home with Clean Renewable Bio-Fuels

If you are currently heating with oil, consider switching to heating with biodiesel (also referred to as bio-oil or bio-heat). With home heating oil prices expected to reach record levels during this heating season, biodiesel is likely to be competitive in price, cleaner burning and made from crops grown by American farmers. There are a number of heating oil suppliers that are offering their customers a blended product. Call you local supplier to see if they offer biodiesel for home heating or visit the National Biodiesl Board website to find a supplier near you.

2) Get Yourself Into Solar Hot Water

Want to make a hot change? Buy a solar water heater the next time your conventional water heater dies (or sooner) -- and if you finance it when you remodel or upgrade your home, condominium, or cabin the energy cost savings far outweigh the amount in the monthly payments on your second mortgage used to pay for your new solar system!

3) Light-up Your Home, Office or Big Box Retail Store

Home: Install a solar path, security or walkway lights. Whether taking out the garbage, walking the dog or coming home late from work or a trip, it's useful to have some solar-generated light at night -- and show your neighbors a practical use of renewables.

Office: The least expensive energy is the energy you don't have to buy. Consider a solar day-lighting solution for your home or office -- day-lighting in offices not only fits the occupation profile, but also improves the productivity of people working there.

If day-lighting is not the right solution, how about coupling solar directly with your store's lighting system?

4) Light-up Your Street, Neighborhood or Town

Outdoor public lighting can often be less expensive if you use solar-powered lights and not only for driveways, but on roadways, piers, parking lots, signage, street and security lights -- providing immediate savings for not having to run or bury electric wires, not to mention the ongoing electric bill. Properly designed outdoor solar lighting also provides the right amount light for the task without over lighting, so as not to get that "urban glow" -- great for urban dwellers, rural consumers, and astronomy buffs.

5) Renewable Consumer Products

To prove that clean, green renewable energy can be hip and fashionable too, we have compiled a list of 'cool' consumer products and gadgets that integrate renewable energy. A solar watch by Citizen or Junghaus, the Casio Scientific Solar Calculator, the new iPod charger by Solio, a battery or solar backpack charger by Reluminati, even solar-powered models for children -- RE-powered products are popping up all over the place.

Germany to support clean renewable energy through 2008

Solar energy article from PlanetArk.org

BERLIN - Germany's next government aims to maintain the current commitment to renewable energy and will leave existing legislation unchanged until at least 2008, according to a draft plan by the likely next administration.

"We will pursue ambitious targets for the further expansion of renewable energy," it said in a draft deal between the country's two main parties obtained by Reuters on Friday.
That means Germany will stick to its target of ensuring renewable sources make up at least 20 percent of the country's overall energy requirement by 2020, a goal outlined by the previous Social Democrat (SPD)-Greens government.

Germany's two largest parties -- the SPD, the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and their sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) -- are hoping to reach a power-sharing accord by Nov. 12 after a hung parliament in last month's election.

However, under a draft coalition deal, changes to the promotion of wind, hydro or solar power could only take effect from 2008. The idea of limiting the promotion of renewables has also been ruled out.

"Germany will continue to take a leading role in national and international climate protection," the draft document said.

The conservatives had been cool towards tight environmental targets, but the SPD is set to be in charge of the environment ministry under a "grand coalition" of the two parties.

The parties envisage increasing the level of support provided to make buildings more environmentally friendly to 1.5 billion euros ($1.82 billion) from 360 million euros per year.

The draft also outlines the likely next government's hope of preventing German companies making windfall profits from trading carbon dioxide emission certificates from 2008.

Firms received pollution rights from the government for free this year. The rights, in the form of certificates, can be traded.

The draft says Germany will support the European Commission into its investigation of how air transport can be incorporated into emissions trading.

It also says the future German government will consider making it necessary for auto fuels to contain some more environmentally friendly ingredients, such as ethanol, and that the agriculture sector's use of such fuel could be promoted.

Shell Solar building 10 MW Photovoltaic system in Germany

Story from SolarBuzz.com

Pocking, Germany: Shell Solar 10 Megawatt Photovoltaic System Starts to Take Shape in Pocking

Shell Solar reports that progress has been made with the construction of the 10 Megawatt solar power plant at a former military area near Pocking, Bavaria. A quarter of the solar panels and three quarters of the mounting systems have now been installed.

Following the start of the construction at the end of August, 15,000 modules with a total output of 2.5 Megawatts is now in place at the solar power plant.

The installed solar panels are all working properly and are mounted on aluminum structures, with a total length of approximately 16.5 km.

Shell explains that this means that the construction of what Shell says is the world's largest single connected solar electric power plant is well on plan.

Connection to the grid is expected from the beginning of December, whilst the completion of the entire project is expected in March 2006.

At completion, the solar plant will consist of approximately 62,500 modules and will deliver electricity to almost 3,300 households in Germany per year. The power plant will consist of 6 sub plants of each 1.667 MWp, which are linked in parallel to the 20kV grid of the utility E.on Bavaria.

7.5 Megawatts Still to Go

At the time of the original announcement of the project in August, Wolfgang Lange, manager Shell Solar GmbH said, "this is a new milestone in the solar PV business and in the development of large solar plants in particular. After the launch the World's first large solar plant of 5 MW near Leipzig, we again illustrate with this project, our leading competence and technology experience in this 10 MW power station."

He added, "It is an important achievement and will significantly contribute to the economies of scale and lowering the price of solar PV. According to Shell Scenarios, solar PV will play an important role in the future energy mix".

US Renewable Energy Capacity up 1,000 % in just 5 years

Corporate America Buys in to Renewable Energy

Austin, Texas [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Renewable energy capacity in the United States supported by voluntary demand rather than regulatory requirements now tops 2200 MW -- up more than 1,000 percent in just five years, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released this week at the Tenth National Green Power Marketing Conference in Austin, Texas.

The report also notes that purchases by large businesses, institutions and governmental entities are driving the growth of the U.S. voluntary green power market.

Green power currently accounts for about 2 percent of America's electricity supply, but voluntary purchasing of renewable energy is accelerating development of new renewable energy sources. The report, from DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), "Green Power Marketing in the United States: A Status Report," shows that renewable generating capacity in the United States installed to meet voluntary green power purchasing soared from 167 MW in 2000 to more than 2,200 MW by the end of 2004 (report available at the link below).

While the number of residential customers buying green power has more than doubled over the past five years, green energy purchases by large businesses and other U.S. organizations have increased dramatically. This is further illustrated by new data released today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership. The Partnership, a voluntary program that encourages large organizations to switch to green power for a specified minimum portion of their annual electric usage, has grown from 21 Founding Partners in 2001 to more than 600 Partners, including Fortune 500 companies, universities, trade associations, and local, state, and federal government agencies.

These Green Power Partners are collectively purchasing more than 3.1 billion kWh of green power annually, a figure that has doubled over the past 15 months. This represents a growth of 1000 percent since the Partnership began in 2001 with Founding Partners purchasing 3.1 million kWh annually. Three billion kWh is enough electricity to power about 300,000 average American homes for a year, and is roughly equivalent to the annual output of a 1000 MW wind farm.

"Five years ago, the voluntary green power market was focused primarily on residential purchasers, and there were only a handful of significant non-residential purchasers," said Douglas L. Faulkner, acting assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. "The entry of commercial, industrial, and government purchasers into the renewable energy market has resulted in tremendous growth in the development of clean and limitless renewable energy resources."

The new report also notes that over the past five years, average renewable energy price premiums for utility programs have declined at an annual average rate of 8 percent as wind-generated power becomes increasingly competitive against natural gas-fueled generation. In Colorado and in Texas, escalating natural gas prices have pushed electricity rates for regular utility customers higher than rates being paid by customers subscribing to green power options.

Biogas Program Generates Sustainability in Katmandu, Nepal

Renewable Energy: A View from Kathmandu, Nepal

by Mallika Aryal, Contributing Writer, RenewableEnergyAccess.com

Sabitri Ghimire's family in Chapagaun, just outside of Nepal's capital Kathmandu, has been using biogas stoves to cook two meals every day for the last three years. Ghimire's biogas plant can run for four hours, exactly enough time for her to cook rice, lentils and vegetables for her family of seven.

"I used to spend all day looking for firewood and cleaning pots and pans," says Ghimire. "Those days are now gone!" When her neighbors saw Ghimire had more time for other chores, they were encouraged to install their own biogas plants.

Like Ghimire and her fellow villagers in Chapagaun, 140,000 rural Nepali households cook in biogas today. It is a known fact that biogas plants of Nepal help save 400,000 tons of firewood and 800,000 liters of kerosene and prevent 600,000 tons of greenhouse gases from escaping into the atmosphere.

While the global benefits of the biogas plants are immense, the technology of the plant itself is quite simple; dung goes in, gas comes out. The Nepali biogas plant design uses an airtight underground digester, where dung is put in the stirrer with some water. Here bacteria, which occur naturally in cow dung, break raw materials down to produce methane. The reaction in the biogas plant takes place in the absence of oxygen and the gas contains up to 70 percent methane and 30 percent carbon dioxide. When gas is produced, out comes the slurry, which can be later used as organic fertilizer.

Nepal's Biogas Support Program has extended its work to 66 of the nation's 75 districts and plans to have 200,000 biogas plants installed by 2009. A plant suitable for a rural household costs US $300. Government subsidies have made the plants affordable. An individual invests only $200 and his investment is recouped in three years. A very good deal indeed!

Now the Nepali biogas plants are on their way to becoming a "good deal" for the global environment. When Kyoto Protocol, the global climate treaty, will enter into force for Nepal in December 2005, it would be eligible to start trading the carbon dioxide not emitted by using biogas and earn up to $5 million per year. The Clean Development Mechanism established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change makes this trading possible. The industrialized nations can buy such credits to compensate for the extra greenhouse gases they produce over the allowances set by the Protocol.

Bikash Pandey, Nepal Director of Winrock International, which has been assisting the Biogas Support Program in developing the biogas project into a Clean Development Mechanism project, says biogas has tremendous local benefits, ranging from decrease in indoor smoke to reduction in work load of rural women and children. "The payment for reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases generates enough revenue to provide the local benefits for free."

Recently the Biogas Support Program was awarded US$54,000 Ashden Award for 'Outstanding achievement in using sustainable energy to improve the quality of life and protecting the environment'. The program is planning to use the award money in high altitude biogas research. "With the money from the award, we are looking to install biogas plants in 400 more households in areas of Nepal where water is scarce," says Sundar Bajgain, the biogas program's executive director.

The success of this project huge and it is being replicated in other Asian and African countries. The secret to success of Nepal's biogas program is strict quality control. One company controls quality here and this nonprofit organization uses local people and local financial institutions. "Everyone is involved and they all have a sense of ownership that has generated sustainability and success of the project," says Bajgain.
