Pocking, Germany: Shell Solar 10 Megawatt Photovoltaic System Starts to Take Shape in Pocking
Shell Solar reports that progress has been made with the construction of the 10 Megawatt solar power plant at a former military area near Pocking, Bavaria. A quarter of the solar panels and three quarters of the mounting systems have now been installed.
Following the start of the construction at the end of August, 15,000 modules with a total output of 2.5 Megawatts is now in place at the solar power plant.
The installed solar panels are all working properly and are mounted on aluminum structures, with a total length of approximately 16.5 km.
Shell explains that this means that the construction of what Shell says is the world's largest single connected solar electric power plant is well on plan.
Connection to the grid is expected from the beginning of December, whilst the completion of the entire project is expected in March 2006.
At completion, the solar plant will consist of approximately 62,500 modules and will deliver electricity to almost 3,300 households in Germany per year. The power plant will consist of 6 sub plants of each 1.667 MWp, which are linked in parallel to the 20kV grid of the utility E.on Bavaria.
7.5 Megawatts Still to Go
At the time of the original announcement of the project in August, Wolfgang Lange, manager Shell Solar GmbH said, "this is a new milestone in the solar PV business and in the development of large solar plants in particular. After the launch the World's first large solar plant of 5 MW near Leipzig, we again illustrate with this project, our leading competence and technology experience in this 10 MW power station."
He added, "It is an important achievement and will significantly contribute to the economies of scale and lowering the price of solar PV. According to Shell Scenarios, solar PV will play an important role in the future energy mix".
